Matariki, the Māori New Year, invites us to reflect on the past, be mindful of our present, and give hope for the future. This year, our community came together for an open mic night and a shared meal, creating an uplifting atmosphere that brought joy to everyone present.
The highlight of the night was undoubtedly the lineup of performers. From seasoned musicians to enthusiastic newcomers, each act brought a unique energy to the stage. The mix of musical genres included everything from folk tunes, rap, and original songs concerning climate change, ensuring that there was something for everyone to enjoy.
Beyond the music and festivities, we allowed a place for remembrance by inviting guests to add their loved ones to our Pōhutukawa wall. There was also a space to craft paper stars for Hiwa-i-te-Rangi the wishing star.
Closing with everyone singing Tutira Mai Ngā Iwi, led by one of the youngest attendees, it was a wonderful end to our 3rd annual Matariki celebration.
