Albert Eden Garden Festival

We had such a great time at the inaugural Albert-Eden Garden Festival on Saturday 15 November. We spent months planning to build a mini version of our community garden to show off, and our team really delivered!

From an idea to reality:

When we were invited to take part in this event, we knew we had a big task ahead to include so many features from our garden, and allude to other features of the Hub too. From the beginning there was going to be a beehive, rainbow garden, water collection, and an example of our IBC wicking beds. While the layout and construction of the garden evolved, we were able to keep all these features.

Setting up

We had all day Friday to set up our display garden. We were grateful for the use of Dylan the truck to help us ferry over all our equipment.

Event Day

Because of the wet start to the day, we were invited inside to attend some of the free workshops. We made pollinator friendly seed bombs, and got kits to grow our own oyster mushrooms. Once the rain had cleared, we had so many visitors to the display garden. The team were on hand to talk about beekeeping and explain how our wicking beds work. We were also grateful to Charles from Ecoballoons for providing balloon twisting entertainment for the kids.

It was overall a really great event, with plant giveaways, free workshops, crafts, tamariki zone, marketplace, kai alley and the added bonus of the Waiorea CRC $5 fill a bag sale happening right next door.

Thanks to the support from Albert Eden Local Board, we were able to produce new informative signage to use at the Hub after the event, as well as spread some lovely flowers around the garden for colour and as food for the bees.

We're grateful to everyone who supported this event and project. Anna Wong, Rachel Wood, Steve Leslie, Sharron & Bruce Holden, Charles Dolbel, Ann Paga, Auckland Central Community Shed, Auckland Beekeepers Club, Kings Plant Barn St Lukes, Wendy Wong, Silke Hartung, Urban Ark.
